About Us

The Schaefer Lab has two primary research objectives.

The first is improving scientific understanding of the relationship between environmental exposures (e.g., socioeconomic disadvantage, environmental toxicants, victimization, substance use) and psychopathology, thereby generating actionable insights for interventionists, policymakers, and consumers. Work in line with this objective seeks to (1) determine whether associations between environmental factors and mental health represent causal processes (vs. statistical confounding), as well as (2) identify modifiable mechanisms that might drive causal effects.

The second research objective is to contribute to the destigmatization of mental health problems and wider uptake of evidence-based treatments. Dr. Schaefer has written several research and popular science articles showing that if people are followed long enough while being assessed frequently for mental disorders, almost everyone will accrue at least one psychiatric diagnosis at some point.

Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Schaefer Lab is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment that values diversity in all its forms. We firmly believe that a diverse team leads to enhanced perspectives, innovative ideas, and more effective solutions to the complex challenges we face in our field of study. We strive to create an atmosphere where individuals from different backgrounds, cultures, abilities, and identities feel welcome, respected, and encouraged to contribute their unique experiences and insights. We are dedicated to promoting equity by addressing systemic barriers and fostering an equitable playing field for all members of our lab, regardless of their individual characteristics or circumstances.

In our lab, we proactively promote inclusive practices, such as equitable recruitment and selection processes, fair access to opportunities, and transparent decision-making. We recognize that diversity is not only about representation but also about creating an environment where every individual feels valued and empowered. We encourage open dialogue, collaboration, and fostering a sense of belonging, where everyone's contributions are respected and celebrated. We actively seek feedback from our lab members to continuously improve our practices, policies, and overall culture.
